"Manifestation" with Integrity
I've been in the "power of the mind" space for a long time, yet I only recently discovered Dr. James Doty, thanks to a spot-on recommendation from the YouTube algorithm. Sometimes, YouTube delivers just what you need. Listening to Dr. Doty's perspective on manifestation was powerful—he approached the topic with sobriety and practical steps, offering a refreshing antidote to the get-rich-quick schemes that prey on people's hopes.
For the record, I 100% believe in the power of manifestation, but with these grounded facts:
It’s not an overnight thing.
It’s not as easy as the grifters make it sound.
You have to do the work.
Alignment of the subconscious mind is essential, yet the worst peddlers of this concept rarely explain how to achieve it properly.
On the Dhru Purohit podcast, Dr. Doty, a neurosurgeon, shared his personal story of growing up in a home filled with Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). ACEs are defined experiences that increase the likelihood of adult issues like joblessness, addiction, poor relationships, incarceration, and illness.
(For a list of ACEs, refer to the end of this post.)
Dr. Doty's life took a decisive turn when he met a woman in a magic shop by chance. She taught him mindfulness and manifestation techniques that closely resemble what I practice in hypnotherapy sessions. Dr. Doty’s encounters with this woman profoundly altered his life path, steering him away from the troubled road his ACEs could have led him down.
What stands out to me is how the "mindfulness" techniques that transformed Dr. Doty's life are remarkably similar to the methods we use in hypnotherapy. Hearing these concepts described in different terminology by a successful neurosurgeon underscores the universal power of these practices.
In my opinion, you can achieve good results on your own by following Dr. Doty’s steps. However, the truth is that many people struggle to shift out of their sympathetic nervous system, focus their attention, and visualize a detailed outcome by themselves. Everyone knows they should meditate and has heard the benefits, yet many don’t because these practices are challenging when you're new and trying to teach yourself.
The best approach is to work with a skilled hypnotherapist who can guide you through the process. After a few sessions, when you’ve cleared out some mental weeds, trained your nervous system to relax on command, and gained clarity on your goals, you can take over and perform these exercises on your own.
I always compare working with a hypnotherapist to hiring a sherpa to guide you up a mountain. Yes, you could reach the top on your own (you’re doing all the work anyway), but a good sherpa will get you there faster, more safely, and make the journey more enjoyable.

Dr Doty’s Steps to Manifestation
Relaxation and Mindfulness
Begin by calming the mind and body. This involves deep breathing exercises and focusing on the present moment to achieve a state of relaxation.
Setting an Intention
Clearly define what you want to manifest. This step involves focusing on a specific goal or desire with clarity and conviction.
Visualization
Imagine the desired outcome as if it has already happened. Engage all your senses in this visualization, making the experience as vivid and real as possible.
Emotional Engagement
Connect emotionally with the visualization. Feel the positive emotions associated with achieving your goal, such as joy, gratitude, and satisfaction.
Letting Go
Release attachment to the outcome. Trust in the process and let go of the need for control, allowing the universe to work in its own way and time.
Gratitude
Cultivate a sense of gratitude, both for the current moment and for the future you are creating. Gratitude reinforces positive emotions and aligns your mindset with abundance.
